In the Bible, the baptism performed by John the Baptist holds great significance in understanding the concept of spiritual rebirth. John's baptism, as described in Acts 1:5, is a baptism of water that carries divine authority.

In John 1:19-34, we learn that Nicodemus, a Pharisee and a member of the Jewish ruling council, was aware of John's baptism but did not fully comprehend its meaning. Seeking further understanding, Nicodemus went to see Jesus.

Jesus, in his conversation with Nicodemus, explains the requirement of being "born again" to enter the Kingdom of God. He defines being born again as being born of both water and Spirit. This statement implies that the act of baptism is essential for spiritual rebirth.

Contrary to the belief that being born again simply involves believing, the New Testament accounts points out that if that were the case, individuals like Cornelius, Paul, and the Eunuch would never have been baptized. This suggests that baptism is an integral part of the process of being born again.

Jesus further explains that while physical birth is a natural process, the spiritual birth is of the Spirit. He emphasizes the need for both a first and second birth, both of which involve water. This indicates that water is not to be excluded from the spiritual birth, as it is a vital component. 1 John 5:1-12

It is important to note that Jesus and his disciples, along with John the Baptist, also practiced and emphasized the significance of baptism. This further supports the understanding that baptism is an essential part of the spiritual rebirth process. John 1 and John 3.

The approval of John's baptism by Jesus is pivotal in understanding its divine sanction. At the final judgment, distinct groups face the Lord—those misled by false beliefs are disowned, as God, being Spirit, must be worshipped in spirit and truth. There are many that say "Lord Lord" refusing to enter His Kingdom. How will you be known by Him if the spiritual man has not been born? Matthew 7:21-23 This underscores the necessity of true spiritual rebirth through obedience to His Gospel preached in John 3.

God cautions against following any false gospel which includes a faith only gospel as vain, worthless and dead. 1 Corinthians 15:1-2,1 Corinthians 15:12-19, James 2:24. To believe in His name is to acknowledge His authority, as exemplified in the disciples' commission to baptize nations in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:18-20). The disciples baptized with water, while the Spirit baptism remains the prerogative of God (John 1:33-34).

In conclusion, John's baptism, performed with divine authority, holds great significance in understanding the concept of spiritual rebirth. Jesus affirms the importance of baptism as a necessary step in the process of being born again. By being baptized, individuals have participated in the death, burial and resurrection, putting on Christ. Colossians 2:9-15, James 2:14-26, John 6:35, Matthew 22:11-14 and Galatians 3:27.
